Features
Uses your device's voices
The tool uses the Web Speech API, so it can use the high-quality voices that come with Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and Chrome.
Many languages
Pick a voice in the language of your text. Which languages are available depends on your device; many phones include Hindi, Arabic and more, and some include Urdu.
Private
Speech is generated on your device or by your browser's speech service. ToolsUnlocked does not receive or store your text.
When to use it
Proofreading
Listening to your own essay or email is one of the easiest ways to catch missing words and clumsy sentences.
Learning and accessibility
Hear the pronunciation of a passage in another language, or listen to long articles instead of reading them on screen.
Rest your eyes
Listen to long emails, reports or study notes while you rest your eyes or do something else, and pause whenever you want to take notes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download the audio as an MP3?
Not with this tool. Browser speech plays through your speakers and does not give websites an audio file to save, which keeps it free and private.
Why are the voices different on my phone and laptop?
Each operating system ships its own voices. Chrome on desktop also adds some online voices. Try another device or browser if you need a particular accent.
Is there an Urdu voice?
Only if your device has one installed. Check your phone's text-to-speech settings for language downloads, then reload this page.
Why does reading stop on long texts in some browsers?
Some browsers pause speech when the tab goes to the background. Keep the tab open, or split very long text into parts.
How fast should I set the speed?
1 is a natural pace, about 150 words per minute. Many people proofread comfortably at 1.2 to 1.5.
Does this work offline?
Many devices include voices that work without internet once the page has loaded, especially on Windows, macOS and iPhone. Some voices in Chrome are online voices and need a connection. If one voice stops working offline, choose another from the list.
