How to use the Marla, Kanal and Sq Ft Converter

  1. 1 Choose the marla size that applies to your land: 272.25 sq ft for fard and patwari records, or 225 or 250 sq ft if your society uses that size.
  2. 2 Type the area and pick its unit, for example 10 marla, 1 kanal or 2,250 square feet.
  3. 3 Read the answer in the blue box, and check the table for the same area in kanal, square yards, square metres, acres and murabba.
  4. 4 To size a plot, open Plot size from length × width and enter both sides in feet to get square feet, marla and kanal.

Worked example

10 marla plot. With the revenue marla, 10 × 272.25 = 2,722.5 sq ft (302.5 square yards). With a 225 sq ft society marla, the same 10 marla is 10 × 225 = 2,250 sq ft (250 square yards), which is 472.5 sq ft less. A 50 × 45 ft plot is 2,250 sq ft, so it is exactly 10 marla in a 225 sq ft society but only 8.26 marla in revenue units.

Features

Three marla standards

Switch between 272.25, 250 and 225 sq ft per marla. Kanal always follows as 20 marla, so 1 kanal is 5,445, 5,000 or 4,500 sq ft.

Every unit at once

One value is shown in marla, kanal, square feet, square yards (gaz), square metres, acres and murabba, so you never convert twice.

Plot length × width

Enter the length and width of a rectangular plot in feet and see its size in marla and kanal for the marla size you chose.

When to use it

Buying a plot in a society

A 5 marla plot in a society that uses 225 sq ft is 1,125 sq ft, while the same 5 marla in revenue units is 1,361.25 sq ft. Compare both before you agree a price per marla.

Reading a fard or registry

Revenue papers record land in kanal, marla and sarsai using the 272.25 sq ft marla. Convert those figures to square feet or acres to compare them with a survey or a sale deed.

Agricultural land

Farm land is often sold by the acre or murabba. One acre is 8 kanal or 160 revenue marla, and one murabba is 25 acres, so you can turn a quote per acre into a price per kanal.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in 1 marla?

It depends on the standard. The traditional revenue marla is 272.25 sq ft (30.25 square yards). Many housing societies use 225 sq ft (25 square yards), and some schemes use 250 sq ft. Check your allotment letter, site plan or fard to see which one applies to your plot.

How many marla are in 1 kanal?

One kanal is always 20 marla. So 1 kanal is 5,445 sq ft with the 272.25 sq ft marla, 5,000 sq ft with the 250 sq ft marla and 4,500 sq ft with the 225 sq ft marla.

How many kanal are in one acre?

One acre is 43,560 square feet, which is exactly 8 kanal or 160 marla in revenue units. With a 225 sq ft marla, an acre works out to about 9.68 kanal, which is why society plots look larger in marla than farm land of the same size.

Why does my 10 marla house have less area than the converter shows?

Your society probably uses a 225 sq ft marla, so 10 marla is 2,250 sq ft rather than 2,722.5 sq ft. Select 225 sq ft above. Built-up and covered area are also smaller than the plot area because of setbacks and open spaces required by building rules.

Does Karachi use marla?

Usually not. Karachi and most of Sindh sell plots in square yards, such as 120, 240 or 500 sq yd. Use the square yards unit in this converter to see the same plot in marla or kanal.

Results are estimates based on the official rates linked above. Confirm important figures with the issuing authority or a qualified adviser before you act on them.
