Features
Accurate in many languages
Word boundaries are detected with your browser's built-in language rules, so counts stay correct for English as well as Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese and Japanese text.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time uses an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and speeches.
Keyword frequency
Common filler words like the, and and of are ignored, so the keyword list shows the words that actually shape your writing, with their share of the total.
Private drafts
Your text stays in your own browser. It is saved locally so you do not lose work, and you can clear it with one click.
When to use it
Essays and assignments with a word limit
Teachers and universities often set a range such as 1,500 to 2,000 words. Paste your draft to see exactly where you stand before you submit.
Meta descriptions, ads and social posts
Character limits matter more than words for search snippets, ads and posts. The live character count helps you write to the limit without being cut off.
Speeches and video scripts
Use the speaking time estimate to plan a two-minute pitch or a ten-minute talk. As a rule of thumb, 300 words fill about two minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter decide what a word is?
A word is a run of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words such as well-known count as one word, and punctuation, emojis and extra spaces are not counted.
Why is my count slightly different from Microsoft Word?
Word processors treat some cases differently, for example numbers with symbols, slashes or links. The difference is usually only a few words, which is well within the tolerance of most word limits.
Does it count characters with or without spaces?
Both. The main panel shows all characters including spaces, and the Details panel shows the count without spaces, which some forms and translators use.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
Your text never leaves your device. It is only stored in your browser's local storage so it survives a refresh. Press Clear to remove it.
How is reading time calculated?
We divide your word count by 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed found in research. Technical writing usually takes longer to read.
