How to use the Brick Calculator
- 1 Enter the wall length and height in feet.
- 2 Choose the wall thickness: 4.5, 9 or 13.5 inches.
- 3 Choose the mortar mix.
- 4 Enter brick and cement rates for the cost.
Worked example
A 20 ft long, 10 ft high, 9 inch wall in 1:6 mortar. The wall is 150 cft, needing about 2,127 bricks with wastage, about 6 bags of cement and 43 cft of sand. At Rs 18 a brick and Rs 1,450 a bag, materials cost about Rs 46,986.
Features
Standard brick

Frequently asked questions
How many bricks are in one square foot of 9 inch wall?
About 10 bricks per square foot of a 9 inch wall, or 5 for a 4.5 inch wall.
How many bricks per cubic foot?
About 13.5 bricks per cubic foot including mortar joints.
What mortar mix should I use?
1:4 for strong load-bearing work, 1:6 for normal walls.
How much cement does a wall need?
Roughly one bag for every 25 to 30 cft of brickwork in 1:6 mortar.
Why add wastage?
Bricks break during transport and cutting, so 5% extra is usual.
What brick quality should I buy?
First-class bricks are well burnt, uniform and ring when struck. Avoid underburnt or cracked bricks.
How many bricks are in a truck?
A tractor trolley usually carries about 2,000 to 2,500 bricks, depending on size.
Should I soak bricks before use?
Yes. Wet bricks do not absorb water from the mortar, so the bond is stronger.
What is a 4.5 inch wall used for?
Partition walls inside houses that carry no load.
Are fly ash or concrete blocks better?
Concrete blocks are faster to lay and need less mortar, but many builders in Pakistan still prefer fired clay bricks.
How do I check brick quality?
Good bricks are evenly burnt, have sharp edges, do not crumble and give a clear ringing sound when struck together.
How much mortar does a wall need?
Mortar takes up roughly a quarter of the volume of a brick wall. The calculator converts that into cement bags and sand using the mix you choose.
How much does a 9 inch wall weigh?
A 9 inch brick wall weighs roughly 100 to 120 pounds per square foot of face area, which is why engineers check beams and slabs before adding new walls on upper floors.
