  4. 4 Enter how many people are splitting the bill.

Worked example

A $120 bill in Ontario with an 18% tip on the pre-tax amount, split between two people. HST is $15.60 and the tip is $21.60, making a total of $157.20. Each person pays $78.60. Tipping 18% on the after-tax total instead would add about $2.81 to the tip.

About $1 to $2 a drink, or 15% to 20% of the tab.

Should I tip hairdressers and drivers?

Yes, 15% to 20% is common for hair services, taxis and ride-hailing in Canada.

Is tipping different in Quebec?

Customs are similar, but the tax on the bill is GST plus QST, about 14.975%, which makes after-tax tips larger.

What if service was poor?

Tipping is voluntary. Many people still leave 10% and speak to the manager.

Yes. Tips are normally calculated on the whole bill, including drinks.

Can I tip in cash on a card bill?
