Tax breakdown

How to use the GST/HST Calculator

  1. 1 Choose Add tax to a price or Remove tax from a total.
  2. 2 Enter the amount in dollars, for example a price of 100 or a receipt total of 113.
  3. 3 Pick the province or territory where the sale is made.
  4. 4 Read the total or the pre-tax price in the blue box, and the GST, HST and provincial tax in the table below.

Worked example

$100 in Ontario and Quebec. Ontario charges 13% HST, so $100 × 13% = $13 and the total is $113.00. Quebec charges 5% GST ($5.00) plus 9.975% QST ($9.98), so the total is $114.98. To remove tax from $113 in Ontario, divide by 1.13 to get $100.00.

When to use it

Quoting a customer

A freelancer in Ontario quoting $2,000 adds 13% HST, so the invoice total is $2,260. The same job for a client in Alberta carries only 5% GST.

Checking a receipt

A $57.49 total in British Columbia includes 5% GST and 7% PST. Remove the 12% to see the shelf price was $51.33.

Comparing prices across provinces

The same $1,000 laptop costs $1,050 in Alberta, $1,130 in Ontario and $1,149.75 in Quebec once sales tax is added.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GST and HST?

GST is the 5% federal sales tax charged everywhere in Canada. In Ontario and the Atlantic provinces it is combined with the provincial tax into one harmonized sales tax, the HST, of 13%, 14% or 15%.

Which provinces charge PST or QST on top of GST?

British Columbia charges 7% PST, Manitoba 7% RST, Saskatchewan 6% PST and Quebec 9.975% QST, each on top of the 5% GST.

Which provinces have no provincial sales tax?

Alberta and the three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) charge only the 5% GST.

How do I remove HST from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. In Ontario, $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, so the HST is $13.

What is the HST rate in Nova Scotia?

14% since 1 April 2025. It was 15% from October 2016 to March 2025.

Which rate applies when I sell to another province?

For most goods and services, GST/HST is charged at the rate of the province where the supply is made, which is usually where the goods are delivered or the service is used. Pick that province in the calculator.

Results are estimates based on the official rates linked above. Confirm important figures with the issuing authority or a qualified adviser before you act on them.
