Frequently asked questions

How much goes into EPF each month?

You pay 12% of basic plus DA. Your employer pays 12% too, of which 8.33% on wages up to ₹15,000 (₹1,250 a month) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme and the rest to your EPF.

What is the EPF interest rate?

8.25% for FY 2025-26, the same as the previous year. It is declared by EPFO each year and credited after government approval.

Is EPF interest tax-free?

Interest is tax-free except on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year, or ₹5 lakh if the employer does not contribute.

When can I withdraw EPF?

Fully at retirement at 58, or after two months of unemployment. Partial withdrawals are allowed for housing, medical needs, education and marriage.

Is withdrawal taxable?

Withdrawals after five years of continuous service are tax-free. Before that, TDS may apply.

What happens to EPS?

EPS pays a monthly pension from age 58 if you have 10 years of service. It does not add to your EPF balance.

Can I contribute more?

Yes, through Voluntary Provident Fund, up to 100% of basic plus DA, earning the same interest.

What is the EPF wage ceiling?

Contribution is mandatory on basic plus DA up to ₹15,000 a month. Many employers contribute on the full basic, which this calculator assumes.

How do I check my EPF balance?

Through the EPFO member passbook portal with your UAN, the UMANG app, or by a missed call or SMS from your registered mobile number.

Should I transfer PF when I change jobs?

Yes. Transferring keeps your service continuous, which matters for tax-free withdrawal after five years and for the pension.

Does EPF interest compound?

Yes. Interest is calculated monthly on the running balance and credited once a year, after which it earns interest too.
