Frequently asked questions

How does a committee work?

Each member pays a fixed amount every month. Each month one member receives the whole pot, until everyone has received it once. Nobody earns or pays interest.

How is the order decided?

Usually by draw at the start, or by agreement, with members who need money early taking the first turns.

Is the first or last turn better?

The first turn works like an interest-free loan, while the last turn works like forced saving. Both receive the same amount.

What if a member stops paying?

That is the main risk. Choose members you trust, keep a written record and agree rules at the start, such as a guarantor.

Is a committee halal?

Scholars generally consider a simple committee permissible because every member receives exactly what they paid, with no interest or extra charge.

Can the monthly amount differ?

In some committees members pay half shares. Keep the schedule in full shares for clarity.

Can the organiser take a fee?

Most family and office committees have no fee. If an organiser charges for running it, everyone should agree in advance, and some scholars advise against any charge linked to the money.

What if someone needs their turn early?

Members can swap turns by mutual agreement. Update the schedule and share it again so the order stays clear for everyone.

Should we write an agreement?

Yes. A simple signed list of members, amounts, payout order and rules for late payment avoids disputes, especially when members are not close family.

How can I run it digitally?

Members can pay through bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or EasyPaisa, so every payment leaves a record. The organiser can share this schedule in the group each month.

What is a good committee size?

Many committees have 6 to 12 members. A smaller group finishes sooner and is easier to manage, while a larger group gives a bigger payout.
