Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a tola?

1 tola is 11.6638 grams. One tola has 12 masha and each masha has 8 ratti.

How is 22K price worked out?

Multiply the 24K rate by 22 and divide by 24. Jewellers may quote slightly different 22K rates because of refining and market spreads.

Which karat is used for jewellery in Pakistan?

Most jewellery is 21K or 22K. 24K is used for bars and coins, and 18K for some modern and stone-set designs.

What are making charges?

The jeweller's fee for crafting the piece, often charged per tola or as a percentage. When you sell jewellery, making charges are not paid back.

Where does the daily rate come from?

The All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association announces rates each day, following the international gold price and the rupee exchange rate.

Why do I get less when selling?

Jewellers usually deduct for impurities, wastage and making charges. Ask for the deduction in writing before you sell.

Is it better to buy bars or jewellery?

For saving, 24K bars and coins are cheaper because there are no making charges and resale deductions are smaller. Jewellery costs more to buy and loses its making charges when sold.

Is gold sold with GST in Pakistan?

Sales tax applies to jewellery sold by registered jewellers, and the rate is set in the federal budget. Ask for a proper receipt showing the gold rate, weight, making charges and tax.

How do I check purity?

Ask for a hallmark or a karat test. Many markets have testing labs that check purity with an XRF machine for a small fee.

Why do rates differ between cities?

Local Sarafa associations announce rates for their markets. Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad rates are usually close but can differ by a few hundred rupees.
