Frequently asked questions

Which plan am I on?

Plan 1 is for English and Welsh students who started before September 2012 and for Northern Ireland. Plan 2 is for English and Welsh students from 2012 to July 2023. Plan 4 is Scotland. Plan 5 is for English students starting from August 2023.

How much do I repay?

9% of income above your plan's threshold, or 6% above £21,000 for a Postgraduate loan. Below the threshold you repay nothing.

Is it based on monthly or yearly pay?

Employers deduct it each pay period using a monthly or weekly threshold, so a one-off bonus month can trigger a repayment even if your yearly income is below the threshold.

When is the loan written off?

Plan 1 after 25 years or at 65 for older loans, Plan 2 after 30 years, Plan 4 after 30 years, Plan 5 after 40 years and Postgraduate after 30 years.

Should I overpay?

Often not on Plan 2 or Plan 5, because many borrowers will never repay in full before write-off. On Plan 1 or a smaller balance, overpaying can save interest. Look at your balance and expected pay first.

Does interest affect monthly repayments?

No. Repayments depend only on income. Interest changes the balance and how long you repay, not the monthly amount.

Do self-employed people repay?

Yes, through Self Assessment, based on total income for the year.

Does my student loan affect my credit score?

No. Student loans from the Student Loans Company do not appear on your credit file, although lenders may ask about repayments when checking what you can afford.

What if I move abroad?

You must tell the Student Loans Company. Repayments continue based on overseas thresholds for the country you live in.
