Frequently asked questions
What does pro rata mean?
In proportion. A pro rata salary is the full-time salary reduced in line with the hours you work. Working 60% of full-time hours means 60% of the salary.
How is it calculated?
Your hours divided by full-time hours, times the full-time salary. For 22.5 hours of a 37.5-hour week, that is 22.5 ÷ 37.5 × £32,000 = £19,200.
Do part-time workers have equal rights?
Yes. Part-time workers must not be treated less favourably than comparable full-time staff, including pay rates, holidays, pensions and training, pro rata where relevant.
How is part-time holiday worked out?
Pro rata on the full-time entitlement. Statutory holiday is 5.6 weeks, so someone working 3 days a week gets at least 16.8 days.
Is FTE the same as full-time salary?
Yes. FTE, or full-time equivalent, salary is the pay for full-time hours. Adverts often show the FTE and the pro rata figure together.
Does the hourly rate change?
No. The hourly rate stays the same, which is why pro rata pay is fair. Only the number of hours changes.
Do bank holidays count for part-time workers?
Bank holidays are often included in the statutory 5.6 weeks. Part-time workers should get them pro rata, so a fair approach is to give leave in proportion to hours rather than only paying for bank holidays that fall on working days.
Can I ask to work part-time?
Yes. All employees can make a flexible working request from their first day of employment. Employers must consider it reasonably and reply within two months.
Is my pension pro rata too?
Workplace pension contributions are a percentage of pay, so they fall in line with your pro rata salary. Check you still earn above the £10,000 auto-enrolment trigger.
