Tip Calculator

Work out the tip and the total for any bill in a second, then split it fairly between everyone at the table. Pick a common US tip of 15%, 18%, 20%, 22% or 25%, or type your own, and round each share up to a whole dollar so nobody has to deal with cents.

How to use the Tip Calculator

  1. 1 Enter the bill amount before tip, for example 84.50.
  2. 2 Tap a tip percentage or type your own.
  3. 3 Enter how many people are splitting the bill.
  4. 4 Read the tip, the total and what each person pays. Tick Round up per person for whole-dollar shares.

Worked example

$84.50 bill, 18% tip, 2 people. The tip is $84.50 × 18% = $15.21, so the total is $99.71 and each person pays $49.86. With round up per person, each pays $50.00, the total becomes $100.00 and the tip rises to $15.50.

Features

Quick tip buttons

One tap for 15%, 18%, 20%, 22% or 25%, the range most US restaurants and services expect.

Split the bill

Divide the total, tip included, between any number of people.

Round up

When to use it

Bars and coffee shops

At a bar, many people leave a dollar or two per drink. For a larger tab at the end of the night, use the percentage instead.

Dinner with friends

A $120 bill at 20% between 4 people is $36 each, with the $24 tip already included.

Delivery and rideshare

Check what 15% or 20% adds before you choose a tip in the app.

Group trips

Use it for tours, drivers and guides where the group shares one tip.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip in the US?

For table service, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is customary, and 20% or more for very good service. Etiquette guides such as the Emily Post Institute suggest similar ranges for other services.

Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?

Etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount. Many people tip on the total for simplicity, which adds only a little.

How do I calculate 20% quickly?

Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. On $84.50, 10% is $8.45, so 20% is $16.90.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

Not always. Some restaurants add an automatic service charge for large groups. Check the bill so you do not tip twice.

How does rounding up work?

Each person's share is rounded up to the next whole dollar, and the difference is added to the tip, so the total is easy to pay in cash.

Do I tip on takeout?

Tipping on takeout is optional. Many people leave around 10% for large or complicated orders, and nothing for a simple pickup at the counter.

How much do I tip a hairdresser or barber?

Common guidance is 15% to 20% of the service price, a little more for complex work or during the holidays.

Results are estimates based on the official rates linked above. Confirm important figures with the issuing authority or a qualified adviser before you act on them.
