Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum wage from 1 July 2026?

The national minimum wage is $1,004.90 a week for a 38-hour week, or $26.44 an hour, after the Fair Work Commission's 2026 Annual Wage Review.

How much did it rise?

The national minimum wage rose by about 6%. Most modern award rates rose by 4.75%.

Does the minimum wage apply to me?

It applies to employees not covered by an award or agreement. Most employees are covered by a modern award, which usually sets a higher minimum for their job and level.

What is casual loading?

Casual employees get a 25% loading on top of the minimum rate to make up for no paid leave, so the minimum casual rate is about $33.06 an hour.

Are there junior rates?

Yes. Many awards have lower percentages for workers under 21. Check your award for junior and apprentice rates.

What if I am underpaid?

Talk to your employer first, then contact the Fair Work Ombudsman, which can help recover unpaid wages.

Do apprentices get the minimum wage?

Apprentices and trainees have their own rates set in awards, often a percentage of the trade rate that rises each year of the apprenticeship. Check the apprentice table in your award.

How is the hourly rate worked out?

The Fair Work Commission sets a weekly rate for a 38-hour week. Dividing $1,004.90 by 38 gives the hourly rate of about $26.44.

Do penalty rates apply?

The national minimum wage itself has no penalty rates, but most awards add penalty rates for weekends, public holidays, evenings and overtime.

When does the next increase happen?

The Fair Work Commission reviews minimum wages every year, and new rates usually start from the first full pay period on or after 1 July.

Does the minimum wage include super?

No. Employers must also pay the 12% super guarantee on top of wages.
