Frequently asked questions
How is take-home pay worked out?
Gross pay minus income tax after offsets, the Medicare levy and any HELP repayment. This calculator works on yearly figures and divides by your pay periods.
Is super taken out of my pay?
No. The 12% super guarantee is paid by your employer on top of your salary, unless your package is quoted including super.
Why is my payslip slightly different?
Employers withhold tax using ATO tax tables for each pay period, which round amounts and assume the same pay all year. Your final tax is settled when you lodge your return.
Should I claim the tax-free threshold?
Claim it from one employer only. If you have two jobs and claim it from both, too little tax is withheld.
How much super will I get?
12% of ordinary time earnings. On a $90,000 salary that is $10,800 a year.
Does it include salary sacrifice?
No. Salary sacrificed into super reduces your taxable income. Enter your salary after sacrifice for a rough estimate.
What if I am paid hourly?
Multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours and by 52 to get a yearly salary, then enter that figure.
Does overtime change the tax?
Overtime is added to your income and taxed at your marginal rate. A large overtime pay can have more tax withheld that week, but your final tax depends on your total yearly income.
How do I check my tax at the end of the year?
Compare the tax withheld on your income statement in myGov with the income tax calculator. If too much was withheld, you get a refund when you lodge.
Results are estimates based on the official rates linked above. Confirm important figures with the issuing authority or a qualified adviser before you act on them.
