How to use the Overtime Calculator

  1. 1 Enter your regular hourly rate in dollars, for example 20.
  2. 2 Enter the total hours you worked in the workweek, for example 48.
  3. 3 Choose time and a half (the federal minimum) or double time if your employer or state pays it.
  4. 4 Read your total weekly pay, and the split between regular and overtime pay in the table.

Worked example

48 hours at $20 an hour. The first 40 hours pay 40 × $20 = $800. The overtime rate is $20 × 1.5 = $30, so 8 overtime hours pay 8 × $30 = $240. Total gross pay for the week is $800 + $240 = $1,040, compared with $960 if every hour were paid at $20.

Features

FLSA 40-hour rule

Hours up to 40 are paid at your regular rate and every hour above 40 at the overtime rate, as the Department of Labor sets out.

Time and a half or double time

Switch to double time for employers, union contracts or states such as California that pay 2× in some cases.

Clear breakdown

When to use it

Checking a paycheck

Worked 50 hours at $18? Expect $720 regular pay plus 10 hours at $27, which is $270, for $990 before tax. If your check is lower, ask payroll.

Deciding on extra shifts

Planning a budget

Seasonal overtime can lift pay a lot. Knowing the weekly total helps you save the extra rather than spend it.

Frequently asked questions

How is overtime calculated in the US?

For non-exempt employees, overtime is at least 1.5 times the regular rate of pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. So at $20 an hour, overtime is $30 an hour.

Is overtime based on hours per day or per week?

Federal law looks at the workweek, a fixed period of 168 hours (seven 24-hour days). A few states, such as California, also require daily overtime after 8 hours, which this calculator does not apply automatically.

Who is exempt from overtime?

Some salaried executive, administrative and professional employees who meet the salary and duties tests are exempt. Your job title alone does not decide it; the duties and pay do.

Can my employer average hours over two weeks?

No. Each workweek stands alone under the FLSA, so 50 hours one week and 30 the next still means 10 hours of overtime in the first week.

Is this before or after tax?

Before tax. Overtime is taxed like regular wages, so federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare come out of it.

Results are estimates based on the official rates linked above. Confirm important figures with the issuing authority or a qualified adviser before you act on them.
